New treatment for ADHD is now concentrating on non-drug therapies although the pharmaceutical companies are still hoping for a breakthrough in treating the condition with ever more powerful drugs. The meds at the moment are very controversial and many kids seem to become lethargic and the expression he ‘seemed to have lost his soul’ is often heard.
Neurofeedback or biofeedback is one of the most promising new treatments for ADHD. This method uses a thought operated computer which can provide feedback on how the child’s brain is working. This is the sort of feedback that is given when he plays a game on the computer. In a way it is a sort of brain training program and other methods use brain balancing activities which are similar in scope.
But the treatment is costly and has to be done at regular intervals for several months before any improvements are noted. It is, however, being refined and developed and it may well provide the non-drug approach to ADHD which we have all been waiting for. Read the rest of this entry »
